It's simple to lay two cards and look up meanings in a book....right? But it's difficult to get out of your own way and see what they're trying to say to you!
Tip #1 - Meditate for a few minutes first
Most of us have busy minds. Meditating isn't about totally clearing your mind - so you can let go of that idea - it's about separating yourself from your thoughts. Find somewhere comfortable to sit. Close your eyes. Focus on your breaths; perhaps count them - breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, and blow out, as if you're blowing through a straw. As thoughts occur, try watching them float by on clouds. Think to yourself - "I am not my thoughts. They will be there for me later". If thoughts intrude, put them on a cloud and watch them float away, for now. Just focus on your breathing.
Hold the cards in your lap while you meditate.
Tip #2 - Stillness of mind invites messages from Tarot
Once your mind is more quiet, open your eyes. Light a candle, if you wish and begin to shuffle the cards.
"The Tarot contains a philosphy, an outline of how human consciousness evolves, and a vast compendium of human experience. Shuffling the cards brings all these values into play with each other" - Rachel Pollack, in her book 78 Degrees of Wisdom
Tip #3 - Ask for help!
While shuffling, ask your Higher Self, God or The Universe for help. This is such an important thing to do, and I think it can be overlooked. Think about any issues you're facing, about which you'd like guidance. Try taking a step back from them, as if they are happening to someone else, and you are an observer.
Tip #4 - Decide your question and choose 2 cards!
Decide what you want to know. Good questions might be -
'What is hidden about this situation, today?'
'What talents do I need to use today?'
'What do I need to focus on today?'
'What might challenge me today?'
How you lay your cards is up to you. Some people will lay one, then shuffle again or cut the pack (that is, divide it in two by taking some off the top) to lay another. Others will simply shuffle and then lay two cards when it 'feels right'. Go with your own instincts.
Tip #5 - Look up the meanings in a good book!
I heartily recommend a simple book which gives you a variety of possible meanings to reflect on. Sarah Bartlett's 'The Tarot Bible' is one such book. I usually recommend it to beginners and still use it myself, even with 35 years of experience. There are lots of others on the market. Make sure you have a good book that you resonate with.
Read the meanings with an open mind. Think about the whole picture of your life and where these cards might fit. How do they answer your questions? If you were reading for someone else in your situation, what would you say to them?
Reflect on the meanings as you go through your day. Keep them at the back of your mind (or even keep the cards in your pocket!). Use what they tell you as a filter to interpret your day.
Remember to thank your Cards. Feel gratitude that you have this wonderful pictorial guidance system that helps you on your path to improve and know your Self. Let me know how you get on!
